Interesting story how that came about. Frank Borman was brought in as WH advisor re moonlanding. He asked Safire about preparations in the event of a tragedy. WH was totally unprepared; note date. Safire's memo was in Haldemann's coat pocket that weekend, just in case.

Instead they came back safe and faced ridicule from conspiracy theory dipshits. Also, being stranded on the moon sounds like one of the worst possible deaths.

Everyone of the men who flew Apollo missions deserved their own national holiday. That’s what bravery looks like.

Neil Armstrong's piloting skills saved this memo from being needed. They were in bad trouble during descent

I read an article that said if a garbage can lid had an engine, Armstrong could fly it. He was that good. He saved Scott Carpenter and himself on Gemini 8 when it started rapidly spinning out of control. He had ice water in his veins, which is what you want in that situation.

"In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood." Bill Safire sure could turn a phrase. What providence Nixon never had to read that speech.
