50 years ago this week, Gallup Poll showed Hubert Humphrey (45 percent) beating Richard Nixon (40) and George Wallace (16) for President, with Nixon in 3rd place (29) among Southerners:pic.twitter.com/Ya4DWZLhkZ

Voters shifted to Nixon because he claimed that HE would end Vietnam War & Humphrey was too close to LBJ.All the while, Nixon was interfering with LBJ’s last ditch efforts to end the war before the election. Which resulted in more names on the Wall than should have been there.pic.twitter.com/QEeuTnbyH4

The Chennault Affair is evil and one of the reasons Nixon is one of the worst presidents in American history. LBJ rightfully called it treason. So much worse than Watergate.

Yep, and then the southern strategy started taking hold, Vietnam started looking worse and HH couldn't saying anything too negative about it, and the dem coalition started to fracture. HH came back and was beating Nixon in the last month and then Nixon sabotaged the peace talks.

My first election I was old enough to vote in was the Nixon McGovern presidential election. I was amazed and deeply distressed that Nixon won despite the allegations of Watergate. WILL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE NEVER LEARN? We have a crook/putin supporter in the WH! WAKE UP AMERICA!!

Yeah, but HHH was too close to LBJ, so the Left couldn't support him. So we got Nixon. Oh yeah, way better. Lesson learned.

The Democrats were divided, prior to this the contest for the nomination was between Humphrey, McCarthy, and Kennedy before his assassination. Too many Dems/Libs not happy with choice of Humphrey did not actually vote for him in Nov believing he would win anyway? 2016 parallels?

Aha, but that was before Chicago, Weatherman, and other assorted ultra left/nihilist provocations. Voting America didn’t like what it saw. Law ‘n order, here we come ... Nixon! Not once, but twice!!

The Democrats have not paid enough attention to the white working class lately--which used to be their base. It should still be their base.
