In most airplanes today there is no second class - just first class and steerage.

That’s the upstairs lounge, not coach seating. I think this was the 747.

People will say they want this, but if it comes down to this costing $420 and cattlecar costing $418, people will pick the cattlecar.

But if you can 420 in the $420 seats, I'll pay that extra two bucks.

Of course there needs to be a cloud of cigarette smoke clinging to the top half of the picture.

Stuck in a tiny smoke filled room for hours? No thanks. I'll sacrifice a little leg room for clean air. 2018 > 1971. And that's before we look at the safety statistics. 🙂

It’s MUCH more crowded now, and I just read they’re going to make the bathrooms smaller.

😊 Full planes and smaller toilets will mean lower fares. Still plenty spacious options for those who can afford it. Never before have more people had access to safe efficient air travel. It's a good time to be alive! ☺️

Surely there is a place between the way it is now and the sky lounge. I’d like to see regulations requiring more seat space - at least as large as the median tush plus the next 30%.

No need for seat space regulations. In 1971, only the rich could afford to fly regularly and they had loads of space. The rich still have loads of space today. Unfortunately seat space regs would increase costs and hurt poorer people most. 🙂

Not on any airline I remember! Those were all first class lounges! But you did get reasonable space and a real meal on most flights in coach back in 1971! They even managed to serve meals on short flights like those between NY and Washington!

They were in the back of tourist class (not for long) - I remember it because I used it to give my son some room to crawl around in and play. At any case, if you didn’t fly prime days or hours the plane was practically empty.

Must have been on the coast-to-coast flights. We never saw the big planes with lounges in the smaller markets with shorter flight times.
