It would be very interesting to see a 2018 version of this map to compare.

The 'state' of Chicago has historically had an exceptionally high output of politicians, mobsters, and sausage.

How could this map be so poorly drawn in 1947?
-
It’s a map type called a cartogram. They are abstract maps where geographical areas are distorted proportionally to the value of the attribute being displayed.
-
Thank you — Ive seen this done before, but never knew it had a process name/purpose.

Looking at MA, NJ, CT and PA vs OH is stunning. But it’s also telling about OH’s future.
-
Just curious what does that mean?
-
It means that the role of manufacturing in a region/state comes and goes. 200 yrs ago to 70 yrs ago Northeast was the mfg center of America. Then it moved to midwest and south, and in last 20 yrs has moved abroad (to some extent). You have to adapt or disappear (or both).

Here’s the closest thing I could find to approximate this 1947 cartogram in the present day—a visualization of GDP in the US that shows the strong metropolitan share, now weighted somewhat more to the Sun Belt but not as dramatically as some might guess. http://metrocosm.com/map-us-economy/ pic.twitter.com/7jpl5w2ESS

Michigan, and Detroit, appear to be undersized as of 1947.

Looks a lot like a series of maps the American social history project did. It's also helpful to understanding emerging patterns of wealth distribution, prior to the sunbelt's federal military investment shift.
