Lincoln's speech said that the Civil War wasn't just about the Union but was a fight for human equality. Referencing the principles for which the nation was based on, he redefined what the war was about and changed into a worthy crusade worth fighting for no matter the cost.

The previous speaker spoke for 2 hours. The camera man was setting up the shot as Lincoln began speaking believing he had time but he didn't. That's why the shot looks as it does since the speech was over rather quickly.
