Absolute opposite of Donald “Bone Spurs” Trump. Trump is all about him and his ilk while President Hayes was for the PEOPLE. Thank you BOTH for posting about him.

True story- the site of Hayes’ birthplace in Delaware, Ohio is now a BP station. There is a marker near the lot. I asked 2 people there if they knew the significance of the location. (They didn’t.) When I told them, one asked, “He was born in a gas station?”
-
"Well, yes, but it wasn't a BP then."

He ended Reconstruction allowing the Southern states to disenfranchise black citizens and pass Jim Crow laws. But nice picture
-
Well, had he not ended Reconstruction, it’s very possible that he never would’ve been allowed to become President. The deal was largely brokered between the Democratic and Republican Parties at the time, not Hayes himself.
-
(To clarify, Samuel Tilden also supported ending Reconstruction, so it would’ve also ended had he been seated President in 1877).
-
But the Republicans up to that point had supported Reconstruction, but to secure the White House and perhaps reading the mood of white Americans they abandoned blacks in the south
