My late step-grandfather, Thomas B Preston, was working the wire desk for the Sun the night this happened & I have the memo he received from editorial board the next day conratulating him for his work on the story. He died in 1929.

There it is, Hell on Earth's Grand Opening.
-
Nice one. Photo-a younger Twain?
-
Yes, sir. My goal is to read everything he's ever written. I've made good progress but I still have a good ways to go.
-
Letters from the Earth?
-
Yeah, I read some of it when I was a teen. I was actually too young to fully appreciate it then. I skimmed it again much later and better enjoyed his bitter take on things. I guess I haven't read ALL of it to this day. But I do enjoy his atheism & misanthropy. Sits well with me.
-
Yep, the atheism & misanthropy. I, too, read it as a teenager - my father’s book - and later came to realize how much it shaped my thinking. One of the formative books of my early non-school education.

Maybe you know he argued & argued w/ his wife to convince her that there is no god. He finally convinced her. Then later when she was on her deathbed she was very distraught about there being no afterlife. He deeply regretted taking faith away that could have comforted her then.

That occurred when balance of power and the need for colonies, even if the colonies were in Europe, was policy. After WWII USA built a different model that has let to 70 yrs of peace in Western Europe.
@realdonaldtrump is destroying that model to return to 19th Cent model.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I don't think anyone will ever really understand what started WWI. It certainly wasn't just this incident. Lots of things had already started before.
