Great picture! Grant is a great book, really enjoyed it. What an incredible life!
-
Yes. I learned a lot. Especially about unimaginable violence against blacks in years after civil war and how Grant did what he could to stop....
-
Blew me away how much his fortunes changed from pre-war to post. Incredible life story.
-
Yes! Selling firewood on streets of St. Louis to presidency in under a decade. Gives this slacker hope....

Upstate NY, I think near Saranac Lake. His autobiography was edited by Mark Twain. He had resisted writing it, but was dying and frightened he would leave his wife destitute.
-
Just 9 miles north of Saratoga Springs.

The photo was taken on the porch of a cottage on top of Mt. McGregor, about an hour north of Albany, NY. The site is on the grounds of a former NYS prison, is open to the public, has elevated views of the Hudson river, & is preserved in the same condition as Grants time.

Approximately 300,000 words, written almost solely from memory of events 20-25 years earlier by a man suffering horrible pain from throat cancer. His usually self-effacing, generous manner & fidelity to Lincoln's legacy commend him to our time, bereft of such leadership.

His memoirs contain some of the most powerful writing about the Civil War in clear, strong prose. It is made even more inspiring by the fact he worked on it to earn money for his family after his death.
-
I never read his memoirs. But your comment just made me de use to read it.
-
The volumes are online. He has excellent prose.

I have read Grant’s memoir. For something written over 125 years ago, it is very readable. Its still in print, which is remarkable for something that old. If you consider yourself a student of history, this is a must read.

One of the 10 greatest Americans. His magnanimous treatment of the Confederates at Appomattox was never forgotten in the South. Helped the healing of the Union.

Excellent grasp of history my man!
