I live within a mile of 66 and love it and it's history. This closing was a death knell to small towns along the old route and cannot be underestimated. Not as much here as we're in an urban area but some stretches are quite lonely.

Not exactly. It was removed from the US *Highway* System in 1985, which is not the same as the Interstate Highway System. When it was removed, it lost its designation as US Route 66.

It wasn't part of the "interstate" system. It was a federal highway.
As a teenager, I remember I-40 being constructed... it became the new route to replace 66 going thru Albuquerque NM.
There are Route 66 clubs in California that have had stretches of roadways renamed Historical Route 66.

Drove cross country on it in 1968. Used to watch the 60s television program about two guys and a Corvette driving Rt. 66.
The guy standing beside the road appears to be hitchhiking! That was a different time.
