there were drills to see how fast soldiers could get to ground zero.

My husband was at 1/2 mile for the above ground blast.

My father and his team had to fly over the area measuring radiation at various intervals after the blasts. They'd land, get wanded, shower, then go back up and do it again.

NPR had an interview with one of those guys a while back. They were in trenches, that partly collapsed from the explosion.

Yea and I’m sure the cancer they got from watching was not considered “service related “

My dad did eventually get service related disability, he died from a rare form of cancer at 72 years old.
