My mother, who died last year at 90, said that most people didn’t even know Roosevelt couldn’t walk or stand unassisted. His power was in his intellect and people really didn’t question it. Eleanor was his legs and was hugely respected. This could never happen today.

Also FDR was a great speaker and rallied the people by radio.

If I remember correctly, at Mt Vernon, hot dogs were on the menu. FDR & Eleanor took a chance on the menu and it was a hit.

On FDR’s presidential yacht, the Potomac. It’s now harbored in Oakland. You can tour it, hire it, or even go on bay cruises.

Wow. How fortunate American society was at the time to have gentile leaders who looked the part because they were dignified.

I love the way men and women dressed in those days, such class and elegance. I especially miss the hats, on both men and women. When is this trend coming back, other than in my dreams?
-
You can start the trend. Start wearing a hat I know I do. And I don't mean a baseball cap! People will admire it and copy you. You never know.
-
I don't wear hats in the Summer, but I do a lot in the Winter. I guess I don't socialize much to start a trend. Glad to hear that you wear a hat..... Sharp on a man.
-
Apropos hats— you might be very moved by Billy Collins’ poem: “The Death of the Hat.” I know I was. It’s a lament for the now vanished time when hats were really hats. Enjoy: https://m.facebook.com/BillyCollinsPoetry/posts/459704540757454 …
