So was mine, Leonard Berney. See:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Liberating-Belsen-Concentration-Major-General-Nicholas/dp/1511541709 …
My mother, who is 91 and still alive said my father had very bad nightmares for many years immediately after the war. Brave and tough men.
My mother, now 90 years old, told me Belsen used to be a taboo subject for Dad, but later, he began taking about it, giving lectures, even appearing in two holocaust documentaries @NWFFilm and @noasylumfilm
Bless their souls for all they sacrificed to make this world a better place for all of us.
My father- in- law Louis Nevel Hodge US Army Ranger parachuted in that day. We are so proud of him and then his son my husband followed him. Louis K Hodge US Army Ranger Vietnam. A family of warriors
I served in Viet Nam, but I cannot fathom the courage to charge those beaches in Normandy.
My grandfather landed “in the first wave”, and went on to win 2 Silver Stars, a Bronze Star, and 3 Purple Hearts. As a surgeon, he helped liberate Dachau and Bergen-Belsen. He has inspired me my entire life. We all owe so much to those brave men.pic.twitter.com/9Bpqzs1P0d
ETERNAL Respect and Gratitude to ALL the brave young men who stormed the beaches @ Normandy and SAVED THE WORLD!!! The Greatest Generation changed the world, and left a legacy that will NEVER be duplicated!!!
To think what he captured before the negatives were almost all ruined...!
Capa’s photo editor for those shots, John Morris, just died a few months ago. A wonderful man. And in his own right a fine photographer whose talent was not recognized until he was almost a century old.
The photo made me catch my breath. One of those soldiers could have been my dad. The ocean ran red with blood that day.
We must never forget, and forever be grateful. Too many will allow these events to fade, particularly as our veterans fade. God Bless those who selflessly gave their lives so that others may live in freedom and peace.
What my country did 2 save my mother out of the hell of Nazi Germany means everything. Literally. The fresh scrubbed GI's who were given a meal & shared coffee as my mom's town was liberated. North & East Germans were shot, women raped, and murdered by Russian soldiers same time.
Bravery beyond compare to splash onto that beach in a horrific hail of machine gun fire ...
Agreed. Difficult to comprehend how they did it, with the first several waves knowing death was highly likely.
