One of the saddest days in our history. What could have been if he had lived..,

I was 6 & upset by my mother's inconsolable weeping as she watched the news & funeral; I was confused - did we know him? Friends took me w/them to pay respect as his funeral train went thru our NJ town; what struck me were his kids, some my age, grimly waving from the last car.

-
I was also six and have a vivid memory of lying on the floor of our living room watching the funeral at St. Patrick's, and not really understanding why everyone was crying so much. Looking back of course, it's unbelievably sad.
-
In a year that was filled with such sadness & violence, traumatic despite our being 6 and not really comprehending it all.

I remember this well. I was 16 and cut school to go to the wake in NYC. Wrote an essay for English class about it. Formative event for me. Thanks for posting.

I remember it well. I was 12. My parents were ashen-faced. They really believed in Bobby as someone who could heal the nation. We were still reeling two months after the murder of MLK. What a rotten year. This one ain't super great either.

Reminds of when my wife caught me crying at the end of a book on Lincoln (DKGs I believe.) She: "Why? You knew how it was going to end." Me (sobbing): "This time I thought it would be different."

Changed the direction of the country for good. He woulda won and Nixon never would have been president, and the post-recession liberalism and great society would have continued instead of a conservative resurgence. Who knows where we’d be today if this didn’t happen

I remember not learning of this until the next morning. I ran to tell my Mom. We were both in complete shock.

The last, best chance of leadership with grace and wisdom during our most troubled decades. Everything that followed is rooted in the chaos that followed this tragedy.

This country was ad racisy then as now and those who paid folk to get rid of both brothers saw the tide shiifting. Either 1 of them would have served 2 terms.

I awoke late at night to my mother's tears. She was devastated. I had just graduated from high school. It was an awful year.
