Lea, this demonstrates well some peoples frustrationbwith spider taxonomy! The three house spiders present in UK are now placed in genus Eratigena (an anagram of Tegenaria!) Unlike in EU, 3 species are recognised in UK, one of which is E. duellica (aka Tegenaria gigantea)

A chunky female Cryptachaea blattea tucked into her messy retreat. Evidently, her web was in an area where dog walking is common!

no. 92 is Crustulina sticta. A nationally scarce coastal species found in numbers in the dunes at East Head today. Such a smart and variable little spider, my 134th spider of the year (before I get down to doing today's linys)

Jan is over and I've managed to see 122 species of spiders so far this year, a smidge behind I think! Here is another mature male Clubiona subtilis from sand dunes in Cornwall. I wonder how many new species February will bring??

Apparently the media have always had a thing for lurid spider articles. I found this in the Canberra Times, dated 27th June 1934. 😏 and

no. 90 (a day late) is Phlegra fascaiata. A charming humbug of a jumping spider that sounds like a throat infection. A rare species of sand dunes & coastal sites, I am hoping to see young at East Head tomorrow

I was very surprised to find these three mature spiders today in some very wet heath/meadow in Cornwall. Trochosa ruricola, Xysticus Kochi and Euophrys frontalis!

Hopefully this tweet and others from the likes of will encourage more people to go looking for spiders in the winter months. Altho’ there’ll be lots of tricky linyphids, easily ID’d spiders such as these two can be found too!

Good to see that the population of Ero aphana in my front garden is still holding on. As yet, it's the only place in the Cornwall where I have seen the spider!

Some linyphiid species can be problematic in isolation, but much easier, even obvious, when compared with a reference set. Centromerita - useful guide by here -

After the female Trochosa ruricola last week, to a female Trochosa terricola this week. I really don't expect to be seeing mature Lycosidae at this time of year!

no. 86 is Macrargus rufus. A big, solid, rather plain-looking liny that's fairly common in woods. Yesterday the only ones we saw at Old Lodge were in a conifer plantation. Found using the suction-sampler

This is the silk retreat of a jumping spider, Salticus scenicus. Note how the spider has incorporated pieces of mortar into the silk sac and although the retreat looks quite conspicuous in the photo, in reality the camouflage is quite remarkable!
