My parents never made much money, but we kept a roof over our heads because we lived in a rent-controlled apartment. Landlords cannot be allowed to raise rents to whatever they want, whenever they want. We need national rent control. #HousingForAll

We rent and it is affordable here in Western PA precisely because the rent amounts are not controlled by government, but rather landlords are able to compete for renters and this drives prices down.

That’s fine when the supply is larger than the demand. When it’s not, it ruins lives and causes homelessness and gentrification.

My point exactly: Bernie sees rent control as needed throughout the entire country, while in reality it is needed, if at all, only in municipalities who wish to impose it

It won’t have any negative effect in affordable places but will be there as a safeguard and in unaffordable places it will chance lives.

National Rent Control is a sure way to reduce the supply of housing & cause a shortage. Now, you could fill the supply gap by spending a lot of money to provide govt housing. But then, why not just spend that money, drive up supply, & let market forces set a new lower price.

The supply of housing is already ludicrously in excess of demand currently, because it is all being built as high return luxury apartments and condos, and oversized mcmansions with poor construction standards. And then sitting mostly empty.

Without rent control or government housing affordable units simply are not and will not be built regardless of demand, because the units have lower return and landlords can discount the loss of empty units from their taxes.

"units simply are not and will not be built regardless of demand, because the units have lower return" Rent control exacerbates that, not alleviates it. Rent control SPECIFICALLY "lowers return". So, that leaves government housing as an option.

Why can't different states with different issues related to rent/landlords devise different solutions? Why apply the same rent control standards to Brooklyn, Newark, Miami, LA, Topeka, Boise, Reno, and Dodge City?

Because many states refuse to protect renters. And nobody said it had to be literally the same exact standard in every location.

Affordable housing is a major issue but national rent control (!) is not the solution. This would be a huge disincentive for landlords to make improvements to properties and may have a chilling effect in new construction

I live in SF. It won’t be if landlords are required to maintain standards. Re: construction. Right now companies build luxury condos worth a cool mil, they sit empty, they claim a loss on taxes. Privatize the gains, socialize the losses.

Govt can raise taxes, fees, costs, etc. but a landlord who owns a private business can’t manage it? Bernie’s plan to put private businesses out of business so govt can step in and save the day. No one drives by govt housing & says “I’d like to live there!” Not going to happen!
