As someone who has been denied housing and Jobs because I have a Marijuana charge for guilt by association that has haunted me, I thank President Bernie Sanders from the heart for saying as President he will Legalize Marijuana Nationwide and expunge records for Marijuana charges.

What about decriminalizing all drugs and treat this as a health issue instead of a crime issue?

This is the best idea. Drug use shouldn’t be in the criminal courts. It’s ineffective. It’s cruel. It treats a health issue as a crime. It doesn’t fix addiction.

I agree with this in concept, but I do have this question: unlike cancer or a broken arm, many addicts don't see their addiction as a disease and have no interest in being "cured" or even helped at all...how do we deal with this?

They’ll get help when they want to. We can provide the referral. As long as their use is personal, I don’t really see how it concerns anyone, or why it should be processed criminally on the taxpayer dollar when we know it doesn’t work.

I absolutely agree with every word of that; I just wonder, from the perspective of the addict, what decriminalization would change for them?

They could get drugs without worrying about being detained, and more than that, the idea is that there should be health centers which specialize in treating said addiction. They could get their drugs there, but also they'd be treated and be rehabilitated without worries.

There’s also the aspect of destigmatized information regarding drugs and addiction, focusing more on being accurate rather than fearmongering like we have now. Hopefully with people being more informed we’d see more people willing to admit if they have a problem.

This only creates a mess for those who need to travel. It's a dumb law, nobody should go to jail for owning a plant. It needs to be overturned at a federal level, rules around how it's sold can be up to the states.
