I had to leave CA after 30 years of residency because I ended up homeless after my rent-controlled apartment was purchased and all tenants were forced to move. I could not afford the rent hike and I had no hope of ever buying a home. I live in a small town far away from CA now.

I'm so sorry you had to leave. The hardest thing for me is that what I love about California is the land, itself. It isn't the businesses or the amenities or anything like that. I am redwoods and oaks, bays and rivers. I'll probably never own a home, but the land is my being.

Hiking and camping in Yosemite and camping in Big Sur (in tent cabins) are amongst my fondest memories. Living near an ocean is what I miss the most. I also love city life, especially live music venues. I'm still within driving distance of mountains and an ocean and live music.

Who doesn't? In terms of non-wealthy individuals. Wages haven't kept up with rents.
-
Yup. Rents are crazy and people are being forced out, left and right. Small businesses are being forced out in favor of more crappy housing for rich people. It's sad to see it happening, and super stressful.

I've been separated from my daughter's father for years and still live on his couch. I don't know what we'll do when she grows up because there's no way I could afford my own place even in low rent areas. A couple years ago we were homeless and me and my daughter lived with my

Mom and he had to live in a car at the body shop he worked at because we were evicted. I can't even imagine women who need to get away from an abusive partner for their safety have to go through. A lot of times they end up choosing the abuse over the street.

I just want to be able to buy a house but the concept of a starter home doesn’t seem to exist anymore. Anything affordable is instantly purchased and flipped back on the market for hundreds of thousands more (and usually done pretty poorly)
