In the “old days”, say the 70’s, a single person working full time could purchase a home, car, and take care of their family. I often wonder: why can’t two people working in a home do that now?

We have a lot more ‘toys’. Cell phones, cable, multiple cars, computers... these things were not available a generation ago. People got by on far less.
-
No it’s more than toys or laziness. Real wages have stagnated since the 1970’s. Inflation, cost of living and corporate profits have skyrocketed but wages haven’t. All the profit is moving to the top, factories moved to cheaper countries & the min wage is unlivable today.
-
During the 1950-1970’s corporations & the wealthy were taxed at a much higher rate, unions were at an all time high and manufacturing wasn’t being outsourced because of horrible trade deals. We’re screwed over a 1000 different ways today and we need to undo all the rigging.
-
People are quick to cast blame but how many actually live within their means? Most folks tend to spend every dollar they earn. I don’t make a lot of $ but I put 15% aside just by watching what I spend money on. Not saying you’re wrong but folks need to be responsible spenders.

$470 rent $75 wifi $50~100 utilities $100 phone bill $70 car insurance $30 gas $120 for food (oatmeal and rice and beans) At fed min wage I’m negative ~$100 At state min im at +$100 My car, phone, shoes break then at the very least I can’t save and very best I’m fucked. 15%?

1/2 Now think of the person who is in school. They simply cannot survive working 40 hours a week and go to school full time. Most jobs won’t or don’t offer that kind of full time for student schedules. And for example the standard in college is that for every 1 hour in class
-
2/2 you should be spending 2 or 3 hours outside of class to do well so a full time student takes 5 classes so in a perfect world 15 - 20 hours of school and 40 hours a week of work now I have school books pencils project material not to mention tuition. 60hours a week and broke

The rich keep getting richer, and the poor keep getting poorer. For some reason poor Republicans are OK with this as long as Women can't have abortions.
-
As far as I can tell the GOP doesn't care if the abortions happen, so long as they are illegal, unsafe, and punished. Otherwise they'd implement policies that actually work to reduce abortion. Universal health care, paid parental leave, etc.
-
I was talking with a conservative prolifer from the Philippines. She said "we have no abortion here." But actually the abortion rate there is crazy high. So presumably she didn't care that the abortions were happening. It is illegal so good enough for her.
-
Lol it's the same with jailed people voting, they feel that they shouldnt be allowed to vote so they're happy they cant, nevermind the fact that it has no positive benefit to society that they can't vote.
-
They like it like that. Minorities get disproportionately incarcerated and disenfranchised so their voting power is diminished. For them this is a feature not a bug.
-
Correct, spot on, like when they scream about the extreme drug crisis in the US, scream about heroin OD deaths, then throw a massive, angered tantrum when a heroin dealer is imprisoned- Oh, my bad, that's the left.
-
Massive heroin dealers? You mean the Sackler family? Yeah you're right. I mean they're the cause of most of the opioid use in the US and they're getting away with it. Actualy they're making a killing at it. Nobody taking thir voting rights though.
-
Maybe slow it down a bit, let your feigned anger & pearl clutching subside, so you're not posting on hyper inflated emotion. Words like "thir" & mistakes like seeing "massive heroin dealers" won't happen on a regular basis.

$2500. A year at university of Maryland in 1970
-
And minimum wage in 1970 was $1.45 so it would have taken 1,700 hours to pay for that. Yet again Bernie lies but gullible supporters believe him. Thanks for pointing that out.
-
If it was so impossible, why do all those boomers love to brag how they worked their way through college waiting tables and mowing lawns?
-
Working your way through college has always been possible, then and now. Don't know who has said it is impossible except maybe Sanders supporters who don't know any better.
-
I’m currently working 2 jobs at ~30hrs/week, and school full time for a STEM double major&minor. Each year I gross $22k. Tuition is $13k a year instate. Rent&utilities is $1000/month. Im at 25k just there. Tell me again how I can afford college if I try hard enough.
-
Some thoughts: Work more hours: 30 hours is not full time: Take a roommate or live with family. You are spending way too much on rent. Join National Guard. You get money and tuition assistance. Etc, etc. And even if it doesn't cover 100% small loans would suffice cover all
-
Not person, but 30 hours with 2 jobs is 60 total. Perhaps a roommate is not viable for their life and studies far from family, which is common. A moral ground of not joining a military complex. Regardless, why are you blaming the victim here?
-
If she is working 60 hours at min wage in Colorado that is $33,300 - more than she said. Why would a room mate not be viable? Why go to a college away from home that is more expensive when you can start at community college & transfer?
