Every second I spend on Twitter brings to mind Nietzsche's warning: "He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you."

This statement was called "very provocative," but it should be a basic assumption. Experts have power that complicates simplistic notions of democratic accountability. "Deferring to the experts" in planning is and has often been a way of masking one's politics. See: modernism.

-I'm like Galileo --Oh, how so? In that you've made new observations and experiments, published ambitious works of natural philosophy, or cultivated both audiences and the patronage of secular and ecclesiastical power-brokers to further your position? - -In that I think I'm right

This could be useful, but most historians of science would find this exceptionally problematic. It's a rather plain anachronism to retrospectively say racist categories are a problem of scientific ignorance. You can't understand racism without the history of scientific racism.

One last thing. The verb tenses of this sentence don't make any sense: "The progress we’ve made has mostly not been due to climate policies that would cap, regulate or tax emissions." What does that even mean? It's not due to policies that we haven't even implemented?

If pragmatism was quietly and efficiently solving problems in the background, we wouldn't be where we are now. It's quite a bizarre stance to say, "Hey, alarmists, pipe down, we're taking care of things."

Moreover, if these are ushered in, then it will be because of the noise of climate activists (who, for the most part, don't actively support one specific climate policy, just action in general), not in spite of it...

A couple of caveats: I do incidentally agree that we need to diversify our approaches to climate change (e.g. increasing the importance of adaptation, promoting technological development, etc.), but these too would be a radical shift compared to what's on the table...

Centrist-pragmatism is so insidious because it reinforces a faux-polarization (and places the "center" where it works for the status-quo) while feigning equanimity. Centrists are just as entrenched in their precepts as those they dismiss as absolutists.

Exactly. There's no transit policy without coordinated housing policy. It doesn't matter how many "traffic-easing" measures you implement if you keep building sprawl. By the way, low-density enclaves within a city are part of the problem - they create the demand for the suburbs.

I've been wanting to revamp my non-bike blog for a while. Instead of essays, I'm trying to do short "reactions." It's mostly therapeutic for me (Twitter is not). Today I wrote about Orwell and Catch-22s: In response to this:

Is it possible that individual actions and systemic effects are related?🤔It would be really nice to know so we could settle the last 100 years of debate in social theory once and for all.

I don't know who this person is; this appeared in my feed. Of course, the "thousands of studies" don't exist. I wish I could provide an insight about the public understanding of science, but the lesson here is this person is a charlatan (who terrifyingly has 100K+ followers).

People focus on the fairness of discrete technologies in sports, but rarely discuss the fairness of complex socio-technical systems in sports. The former is preferred because it evokes the idea of athletic purity, while the latter undermines this myth.

"Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel": I loved this book as a kid, but reading it 45 years later during climate collapse, it's kind of ... ooohhh man. A coal-powered shovel, cheerfully FLATTENING MOUNTAINS so that fossil-fuel-burning cars can tool down infinite highways
