It’s actually the single best possible response this side of inclusive society to the maldistribution of power, wealth and income on the one hand and the diminishing opportunities for reliable skilled work on the other.

There is no doubt that in coming years, new technologies will replace a great many labour-intensive and repetitive activities. It is only just that the benefits of this increasing productivity be deployed to reduce inequality and afford those displaced/denied dignity and choice.

Keane calls anything neoliberal these days. Absolute clown.
-
@scottsantens Its absurd that this Keane calls UBI neoliberal. He has no idea what neoliberal is then. -
You're right. He doesn't. He's using neoliberal in the same way those on the right use socialist and communist - purely as a derogatory word. He probably also shouts neoliberal at food he doesn't like and when he stubs his toe.

you cannot force an employer to pay you more if they can replace you with a robot that's the reason so many ppl have to work for pennies -- better paying jobs are automated away.. since 70s good paying jobs becoming a history -- and that's why

It would be a hell of a lot better than the punitive welfare regimen we have here now. Sure fix wages and employment conditions, but not everyone can participate in that. Why punish those who can't with poverty, stigma and odious regulation? +UBI would save alot in admin.

Ever wonder why low-end wages are low to begin with- and think that it may have something to do with the fact that workers don't have outside income streams they can rely on to increase their bargaining power?
-
Also, why should an "intellectually bereft left" take the intellectually dubious position that the best way to increase wealth equality is with inefficient policies (price controls) that limit potential opportunities for all instead of efficient policies that boost them?
-
And why should a "morally bereft left" conclude that one must work for an employer in order to meet basic living needs? I'm a centrist myself, but that seems like a distinctly non-left position.

"don't support UBI because some bad people like it" is... not a strong argument

Instituting a UBI and a livable wage aren't mutually exclusive goals.

You're very comfortable parading your ignorance. The idea has a substantial history and literature, and Left and Right variants. That doesn't make it right, but also shows it isn't simply a fringe/crank idea. This piece just shows the shallowness of journalistic 'research'.

I'd argue that it's just the opposite, that arguments against a UBI are neoliberal attempts to entrench the current hyper capitalist/corporatist model and ensure that the vast majority of current wage earners are reduced to a form of peasantry.

No. No it's not. Your argument is old fashioned, and details old fashioned problems. We need modern solutions to modern problems. UBI is such a solution.

Why do inner city Marxists rail against the notion that all humans should receive a dividend from the common resources that private property and companies plunder for personal profit? No one is arguing for a replacement of all services but an additional payment.
-
Wow hang on. Wtf are you on about? 'Recieve a dividend from the common resources..." sounds like you need to educate yourself on what a Marxist is.. sounds like you may actually be closer to being one than you think... so many many lols at this tweet.. I laughed out loud.
-
??? I asked why Marxists are against it, considering it seemingly aligns with their general ideology? It's unfortunate when people take to arrogance before properly considering what is being said. There was no implication of my political ideology. Pity
@wateringbronson . -
If you understood UBI you would understand that it is in no way aligns with Marxist ideology. In fact it could be argued it aligns more closely with a libertarian ideology. A UBI would abolish ALL social welfare and replace the welfare state with a flat UBI for all citizens.
-
I regret using Marxists to begin with, it was a broadbrush to paint with and it has taken away from the point, the UBI does not have to replace all other government services? The idea also precedes 20th libertarians historically. Of course, it would be funded by tax reform.
-
Hmm not sure... Wouldn't really be a ubi unless you replace the current social welfare system though I don't think... what do you think?
-
I think the major constraint is how to pay for it all, that would take some careful modelling and long term planning, but I think it’s possible. The pension must have seemed like an impossible task before it became the norm.
