The idea that a Western Sydney No vote is an opportunity for conservative parties relies on the idea that marriage equality is an issue that shifts votes. It never has.

It also relies on them to put aside xenophobia. It's unclear whether conservatives are more afraid of immigrants or LGBTIQ...

By this logic, the yes vote in (e.g) Warringah is an opportunity for progressive parties to shift votes.

Labor went to the last election pledging SSM within 100 days of government, and won all those seats. I'm sure the LNP can win them over with a pledge to repeal 18C within 100 days...

If we want less homophobia we need to stop funding private & religious schools. All kids growing up together is true integration.

Neither side of this debate made any attempt to engage with the people of Western Sydney. However, after the result was released, the print media and talkback radio immediate saw this as an opportunity to blame brown people.

And the rest of the conservatives policies attack those no voters. They don't really like all those people.

Why would the Muslim votes in western Sydeny shift to the Liberals because of SSM? Half the Liberals supported gay marriage, and the other half hate Muslims.

I think it’s the other way round. The constituents with higher percentage of Yes votes with the No vote MP’s shd be very concerned because these Yes voters are really pissed off by the discrimination and hate against the LGBTIQ community through the postal plebiscite.

In that case why aren't there regions an opportunity for labor/greens? The strong regional Yes vote has barely been mentioned in the press.

The interesting thing is it shows Western Sydney is not in play in elections. Except extremely close elections

Socio economic status means the speil of a campaign can swing Western Sydney. I'd also point out - as someone in Greenway, where the demographic is pretty broad - is not just "Westies" in the old vein.

Yes it can swing Western Sydney. However it can’t swing all of Western Sydney see last election. It does not matter if offset in other seats
