Major party politicians have given up defending our liberties. Time for a bill of rights to enable others to do sohttps://www.crikey.com.au/2017/10/06/politicians-contempt-for-liberties-shows-need-for-bill-of-rights/ …

and the excellent work of @DRIalerts shows what even a small organisation can do when they can mount legal challenges (cf Australia)

The problem is there’s no way a Bill of Rights with real teeth could be passed given that same bipartisan contempt for our civil liberties.

USA was fortunate to have passed its Bill of Rights in an era when ppl still cared about civil rights. I fear Australia has missed the boat.

Too many of our existing laws with bipartisan support would run afoul of a strong Bill of Rights, so the major parties will never pass one.

Even if a major party had a change of heart & was able to hold a referendum, it would be hard to pass in current political climate.

Don’t get me wrong, I support the adoption of a strong Bill of Rights; I just think it’s a pipe dream in an era of growing authoritarianism.

A bill of rights should include the right to clean water, unpolluted air, soil security, education, health care, libraries.

As long as it doesn’t include some a right to bear arms. Has anyone drafted a model yet ?

Next step: a bill of rights for animals. Safe habitat for endangered species; the right to a good life and a natural or trauma free death.

To put through a bill which proclaims human right, would be to be seen as defending those rights - so, what chance?
