Was it a sunrise, rather than a sunset? Or was the ship heading east on the Medway not west on the Thames, which would explain the sunset?

The term for a ship with mast/rigging as depicted is 'fully rigged' not 'fully masted' & a ship is always female, not neuter & is not a boat

The tugboat Samson was built on the Tyne, and burnt out in 1839 when ropes were left on the boiler to dry and caught fire
