Great piece by @niltiac on why you should wait til you're old to get private health cover http://bit.ly/29Khdvd

As I say in the piece, it might be worth getting for health reasons or tax reasons but not because of LHC loading.

and I'd rather pay more in tax than pay private health cover, for ethical reasons.

I would feel the same way if Medicare Levy Surcharge was actually tied to health funding but it's not.

It's just consolidated tax revenue and health minister has to beg for funds. MLS also funds Westconnex ... or Nauru.

but I oppose hypothecation as a point of principle (the old public servant coming out), so I'm not fussed.

I think if revenue from a 'levy' is to be treated as a regular tax then we should just make it a regular tax. Deceit

yes, calling it a Medicare levy without hypothecation is odd, but the hypothecation is meaningless in practice

It also works differently to a regular tax because it's on your whole income not just the bit above threshold.

I don't think we should get an exemption from MLS for having insurance but that's a policy question. 1/2

Ethically for individuals buying insurance to avoid MLS is like any other tax deduction (though mechanics different)

Your article completely neglects MLS though, as if that isn't a major reason young ppl have private health.
