Puzzled @CroweDM why you describe Chris Murphy as "independent" when he was employed by Treasury work on its tax modelling.

His firm did work for Treasury when Labor was in power in 2010, then again in 2011, and now under Coalition government.

I'm sure his firm is excellent, but isn't he in effect defending modelling he himself helped Treasury undertake?

if Grattan defends its own modelling, it is self-interested, however independent the original modelling was. same here.

He's independent. Chris Murphy currently a visiting fellow at ANU. You may disagree with his findings but that's economics.

but however good he is, definitionally he's not "independent" if he's defending work he contributed to. not sure why that's unclear
