Puzzled @CroweDM why you describe Chris Murphy as "independent" when he was employed by Treasury work on its tax modelling.
I'm sure his firm is excellent, but isn't he in effect defending modelling he himself helped Treasury undertake?

Sure but if Grattan Institute defended its work would it suddenly not be independent?
-
if Grattan defends its own modelling, it is self-interested, however independent the original modelling was. same here.
-
He's independent. Chris Murphy currently a visiting fellow at ANU. You may disagree with his findings but that's economics.
-
but however good he is, definitionally he's not "independent" if he's defending work he contributed to. not sure why that's unclear
