His firm did work for Treasury when Labor was in power in 2010, then again in 2011, and now under Coalition government.

I'm sure his firm is excellent, but isn't he in effect defending modelling he himself helped Treasury undertake?
-
Sure but if Grattan Institute defended its work would it suddenly not be independent?
-
if Grattan defends its own modelling, it is self-interested, however independent the original modelling was. same here.
-
He's independent. Chris Murphy currently a visiting fellow at ANU. You may disagree with his findings but that's economics.
-
but however good he is, definitionally he's not "independent" if he's defending work he contributed to. not sure why that's unclear

Shouldn't Treasury have the best modellers in the country? I'm worried that they need to outsource!
-
nothing wrong with outsourcing - they don't spend every day of the week modelling the economy.
-
Treasury relied on own staff + Chris Murphy + KPMG. Similar to what it did with Labor company tax cut 2010.
-
Which would mean 3 parties categorically not independent on that work are Treas own staff, CM & KPMG
-
So he's good enough for Treasury under both Labor and Liberal, now at ANU... play ball not man.
-
I assume good enough or wouldn't pay for services. But pay to work, lose perception of independence
