@BernardKeane When is huge tax break not a subsidy ... when pedantic journo says so.

@Gergyl I didn't know Ken Henry and the tax review team were pedantic journos, but if you say so. -
@BernardKeane You are just a humble reporter then? -
@Gergyl you're suggesting I invented that extract from the Henry Review and they never wrote it? -
@BernardKeane Of course not Bernard; suggesting Henry sprouts, and you repeat, convenient fiction. Love your work, BTW.

@BernardKeane I dispute non road use argument, these monsters arrive as bits in oversize convoys, at the limit of load capacity of roads -
@3canary and for any on-road use, fuel excise is payable as the road user charge. Henry explains:pic.twitter.com/iVk1EGbaW1
-
@BernardKeane Applicable but always never paid. Road vehicles fueled from same source as the mine vehs. Treated like their tax liability! -
@3canary I don't see how it's "never paid" - their fuel is taxed, they then have to claim a rebate for it. -
@BernardKeane They attribute the fuel use to off road use, like when they cheat on tax paying, farmers rort in this manner as well. - 1 more reply

@BernardKeane Nicely put by Ken Henry. Carrying a dew scars from defending diesel fuel rebate from Treasury depredations in 1970s. -
@phbarratt it's frustrating. I started in the APS in the Road Transport branch in Transport so I was exposed to the issue early on.

@BernardKeane I've always thought the question is: does that money go directly to roads? If so, they should be refunded. If not, not... -
@leadegroot but it doesn't need to go directly to roads - any more than the Medicare levy needs to go directly to health. -
@BernardKeane thought the snip was interesting - only ever heard the road argument before, not other justification! :)
