Wracking my brain to remember if John Howard’s friend and ABC Chairman Donald McDonald ever tried to get a journalist sacked because of govt. Can’t remember that ever happening.

Wasn't the government upset with McDonald for becoming a huge supporter and defender of the ABC as chair? He also had a relevant career background.

In fact he strongly defended the ABC against interference. I saw his correspondence to Alston.

Whose bizarre monomania on Iraq War coverage was legendary, I think? So Howard later appointed Janet Albrechtsen, who had much less danger of being “captured” by affection for Aunty

And all that did was force Albrechtsen to stop criticising the ABC, while she was useless for running an agenda from the board because she knew nothing about broadcasting. The whole period of "stacking" meant ABC management had a free hand because there was no informed oversight
