It's quite possible to be on neither Milne's nor Guthrie's side. Guthrie failed to back @albericie when asked at estimates. Milne may have been talking to a sympathetic audience when he said "get rid of her". It was still a complete abrogation of his duty.

And instead of sacking Alberici, did Guthrie go one better by axing Lateline?

In public interest its quite possible not to be on any "side", incl journos criticised/defended. Core prob is ABC's independence mechanisms are needed to protect impartiality fm external political interference but also now prevent internal (institutionalised) partiality fm reform

the problem begins because the ABC board are appointments via government recommendation, a genuinely independent (no government involvement) method of appointing board members would go a long way to meeting the ABC charter imo

As wld reforming ABC staff recruitment processes to eliminate/mitigate groupthink & persistence of political bias in the ABC's institutional culture (& denial abt it). History shows constant ABC Board failures to implement reforms needed to restore impartiality as per ABC Charter

staff are a completely different issue, the charter covers them, everyone has personal opinions (& political ones too)

Yes, but the Charter requires they execute their duties impartially (no matter their personal opinion). Judiciary & ADF manage this professionalism & associated institutional culture very well, so why not the ABC?

I don't have an opinion on the staff, except maybe one staff member, the rest I have no issue with, just cranky at losing local radio and the huge Sydney influence

Imo Guthrie's firing was the right thing done for very wrong reasons. I don't want her at #ABC but if she's been sacked for not being enough of a RWFW hack, I shudder to think how bad her replacement will be.

I think the most you can say is Guthrie was out of her depth, under Govt pressure and that she didn’t go in to bat for Emma because Guthrie didn’t have the confidence she needed to execute such a call .

Both should be gone. Guthrie couldn't lead the staff effectively (partially her fault, partially not, but them's the breaks) and Milne is hopelessly compromised

That’s the narrow field of focus lens—-the wide angle linger depth of field lens, indicates this could be the tip of an iceberg of abuse of power among corporate and political elite

Two challenges confronted Milne and Guthrie: the overarching need for digital transformation and political interference. Milne's job was to protect, Guthrie's to transform. Milne's lack of spine means he has to go. Guthrie should be reinstated - to drive into the digital age.
