Since the pension was introduced, male life expectancy at birth has increased by nearly 25 years and male life expectancy at 65 has increased by nearly 8 years (both are still rising) while pension age has increased by just 2 years

Life expectancy and reasonable health are not the same thing. There’s inadequate support for people who get ill or injured. I've supported my husband since he was 55, back injury, to find myself with a heart condition at 62 (now 64) I won’t work again.

With respect, and I fully understand that this is not the case for your family, the evidence suggests that these additional years are actually largely healthy ones on average.
-
And do you realise that people of my generation often started work at 14 and 15? To earn money for the family, not to indulge themselves? A full ten years before many go into full time work now? I did 46 years of full time work. What are you planning?

Problem is a lot of people still do work in those sectors, mightn’t be a majority but it’s still a lot of people. And if you think working in a hospital or a supermarket until you’re 70 is feasible then look around next time you’re at those places, not many people over 60.

Or in a school.

Or in a warehouse Or on the road Or in construction I can go on These white collared dudes I enjoy following are disappointing me today. Head in the sand shit right here

Bernard built the house he lives in, the office he works in and the roads that take him there

And in Australia you're unemployable after 50, so good luck finding another 20 years of paid employment.
-
Don’t I know it! 30+ years of continuous employment and I can’t even get an interview!
-
Best of luck David. I am in Scotland and the attitudes seem very different to the older worker.

It’s not just physical. Lots of work is really stressful, take teaching for example. Far too many leave broken. And if you are, no access to disability. Maybe look into who is not working over 60 and why. Always easy to say it’s fine when it’s not you.

Jobs can take an emotional toll as well.

I was a teacher. Don’t I know it.

Any arbitrary retirement age is kinda silly. 70 is no different than 67 or 65 really. The whole philosophy of retirement needs a rethink.

Yes but even working in retail or hospitality - as you get older your body can’t cope with standing all day.
