What a disgusting little hypocrite @RodgerShanahan is - the Lowy Institute hosted the criminal leaker Petraeus in 2015 but now he demands @xychelsea be bannedhttp://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-08-30/chelsea-manning-australia-is-right-to-question-her-visa/10182838 …

Shanahan's military/intelligence past breaking through the surface of his reasonable think-tank exterior. He needs to explain why Manning is a threat to Australia NOW, otherwise he's just feeding a shouting match.

        1. I was an artillery officer and 2. I've never said she was a threat, just that she should fail the character test as set out in s 501 because of her espionage convictions. But hey, why let facts get in the way of a rant.

Rodger I’m a lefty but agree with you here. Manning is no hero - just an attention seeking oath breaker who should not profit from crime

Ellsberg could have been "convicted of espionage" and "given a long prison sentence" if not for a technicality. What makes someone a whistle-blower? Does a conviction negate it?

And so Rodger - you obviously believe that someone like Peter Dutton, a Minister who rorts taxpayers funds does pass the "character test" in the Act ?

While he did break the law, there's no reason why he shouldn't be allowed to speak in other countries.

The two cases completely different idiot. David Petraeus can make significant contribution to Australia's national security. While Manning gives aid to the enemy. #auspol

Thanks Bernard. Reading the article I wondered about the author's connections because his attitude was very negative. That's fine in itself. However, you joining the dots changes the perspective. I had forgotten about Petraeus and appreciate you bringing it into the light. 👍

I noticed that. His 'opinion piece' is pretty disingenuous and rather lacking in argument. Must have been a last minute 'balancing' opinion to appease ABC management.
