Media advocates for the NEG, remember, are calling a non-policy guaranteeing climate inaction to be embedded permanently in the heart of policy-making until 2030.

I totally agree that backing *any* NEG, and declaring any resistance to it *politics* is completely idiotic. It means people are not across the detail. 26% is indefensible. I'm not in the chuck it camp though. Ambition needs to be argued and fixed.

The problem with chuck it is what's the alternative? Some opponents think a RET/CET. In what parliament? I think the alternative is a proper carbon price, then you don't need subsidies. But again, what parliament? You can say chuck it & have disorderly transition but 😬

I can't work out what we'd lose if a NEG with legislated target didn't go ahead, compared to status quo.

        1. Structure around a transition that impacts a lot of people & the economy. 2. An opportunity to change the politics & have rational Libs back away slowly from past idiocy. This latter point may be impossible, but worth a try IMHO.

But the whole idiotic thing has arisen because of just a few recalcitrant coalition backbenchers. When are we going to stop letting the tail wag the dog? Surely it's time these fools were muzzled?

Political solution that doesn't reduce carbon emissions enough to meet Paris agreement and tries to protect coal.
