What does it actually mean when people "play hardball"? Is there footage of a game of actual hardball available? How hard is the ball? Harder than a cricket ball?

Always assumed it meant stepping up from playing softball (denigrated as a girls' game) to "real" baseball

Correct. Softball is long since integrated in the US. I've only been refused play in Oz on the grounds of gender discrimination.

nerdish response: 'This term originated in baseball, where it alludes to using the standard ball as opposed to the slightly larger and minimally softer ball of softball.' Having played all 3 (indifferently) I'd guess a cricket ball is harder, and we catch it without prissy mitts.

If my memory serves me correctly, “hurling” in Scotland is projectile vomiting after a heavy night out.

To hurl ( spew) would have come from Ireland originally.

A cricket ball is harder and heavier. Some pitchers can throw faster than a bowler.

It means not playing Softball which is supposed to be easier due to the bigger ball and underhand pitch. “Hard Ball” is indeed a harder ball (Baseball) which is smaller, harder and pitched overhand.

Baseball games can be played using one of two sorts of ball, either soft and large, or smaller and hard. The latter harder to hit and catch and hurts more. When I played kids league, one team had the right to choose which ball was used. Playing HB was about a psychological edge
