I find it endlessly amazing the lengths to which privilege will go to protect risk to its rights rather than protect those of the clearly vulnerrable.

I'm reading the new book, 'Eggshell Skull', by @brieloiselee at the moment and will review it soon. It's quite remarkable in how it draws your attention to the way women and girls are disadvantaged in court in sexual assault cases.

I was up until 2am reading it. I’m currently half way and fighting the urge to stay in bed and finish it.

Yes, isn't it amazing? She draws you into the world she inhabits using all the novelistic techniques available to her. Her writing technique is peerless, IMO.

I’m part of a feminist book club that rejected Eggshell Skull on the basis that we had already read too many confronting books, even though it’s only one book every three months. This quarter we are reading Elizabeth Macarthur by Michelle Scott Tucker instead.

A friend of mine reviews books for Good Reading magazine and he says he has that one on his to-read list.

Throwback Monday: Feminist arguments back in the 1970s-80s covered this then "the legal system insists rape only occurs when a man is guilty of intent, if he does not perceive what he does as anything other than sex, then neither will the law"

Lazy barristers want a handout in the form of more slippery laws to benefit their rapist clients?

This is not the legal industry. Just one body within it. You fail to mention that the Law Society submitted precisely the opposite. You criticise others for not letting facts get in the way of their prejudice

Can’t believe a group of mostly older white men would argue this position

It's the equivalent of the rapist thinking, "well, she's asking for it" - regardless of any other factor.

What's your alternative drafting Bernard? Strict liability for sexual offences?

"The Bar Association said adopting those [active consent] provisions could result in cases of "real consent" not being regarded as consent" - & what a shocking risk to run that would be. Not.
