Private health insurers will keep pushing for access to health records until a government - either this one or a future one - caves in. Then they'll use it against their remaining members. Opt out now.https://www.theage.com.au/business/consumer-affairs/we-desperately-need-this-data-nib-boss-wants-members-digital-health-records-20180719-p4zsha.html …

better still, DON'T have private health insurance. DON'T support a corrupt system and claim a rebate from taxpayers poorer than you are to pay for it. Agitate for a fair dinkum universal health care system. we are a rich country FFS #auspol

Please do get private health insurance IF you can afford it because going to a private hospital will not take the place of someone who can’t afford private, who needs a spot in public hospital (obv except in emergencies).

If the billions paid out in rebates for PHI was put into Medicare/hospitals there would be no shortage of spots in public hospitals.

That would be great but until that happens, it’s important that the rich rely on the private system, rather than the public system. Those that earn above a $140k/year don’t receive a rebate.

I’m with Megan. Until we achieve some kind of health utopia, the well-off can keep out of public beds.

PHI does not convert the costs. When surgery by your choice of surgeon costd $10,000 out of pocket, when you can jump the 1 year public waiting list for hernia surgery by paying $2,000 up front, it's proif that the system is broken.

Also I’m not saying the system isn’t broken, but encouraging people not to take up PHI when they can afford it isn’t helping either.

Those earning above the threshold are charged an extra 2%. It's their right to rely upon Medicare as their default health care if they choose. It costs a similar amount & provides more comprehensive cover, although with a longer wait.

It's a con. My health says that it won't give access, and they won't. YOU will. It will become a condition of coverage. No access, no cover or at least increased premiums.

Well then only need to say ‘fine ‘.... no coverage . They will soon change their mind! Don’t forget ... EVERYTHING is a partnership ! Blackmail me & you lose me ! They need YOU to survive! End of story ! People forget their power! My option only !

I'd overlooked that.... Yes, it could be very significant, more so given dna profiling & genetic testing at birth etc - they'll even be able to decide on the basis of parents & grandparents. They'll definitely use it, no matter the attempts at legal constraints...
