If the government succeeds in prosecuting K and Collaery, it will know that it can go after anyone who has embarrassed it or revealed lawbreaking, in full public gaze, under the fiction of national security, without any serious resistance or media backlash.

This is why News Corp has been spared from the prosecution - it might have provoked a backlash. The hope is a successful prosecution, uncontested and uncriticised by the media, will provide a precedent for further attacks on those who reveal government crimes.

This is a true "when they came for" moment in Australia. History will judge those who stood silent - if history is anything other than a tabloid fiction of brave politicians jailing those who engaged in the unAustralian crime of exposing the crimes of the powerful.

We don't yet know what BC and K are alleged to have conspired to do. Until then, how can you make these claims? It's certainly worth reporting on, but isn't it premature to go full-on conspiracy?

Recent news didn't happen in isolation, we know BC's office was raided without judge signature and that K cannot get a passport because "National Security". The secrecy should make us more concerned not less.

I agree. But that's all different to the issue of whether the charges (and the Cth DPP) are part of a conspiracy. We cannot judge the latter without knowing the precise charges, something we rarely know until there's a court hearing.

And, contra that Conversation article, the AG or CDPP explaining their decision now would be a bad thing. We don't want an official publicly saying 'here's what we think they did, here's what we have on them and here's why it's bad" ahead of a trial.

This isn't about what is legal. Brandis getting ASIO to raid the office was legal but it was wrong. Politicians from any side of politics need to be speaking out about this because it is outrageous, legal or not.

I'm not talking about whether it's legal. I'm talking about us not knowing what the charges are, which is normal (as well as legal) and means that it's too early to claim that the prosecution is either outrageous or a conspiracy.

Do you also have no problem with what K exposed, the bugging of the Timorese cabinet? Isn't THAT (and the equally illegal/unethical/corrupt cover up) what THIS is all about?

Of course I do. But my point is that we don't yet know that that is all this is about.
