If the government succeeds in prosecuting K and Collaery, it will know that it can go after anyone who has embarrassed it or revealed lawbreaking, in full public gaze, under the fiction of national security, without any serious resistance or media backlash.

This is why News Corp has been spared from the prosecution - it might have provoked a backlash. The hope is a successful prosecution, uncontested and uncriticised by the media, will provide a precedent for further attacks on those who reveal government crimes.

This is a true "when they came for" moment in Australia. History will judge those who stood silent - if history is anything other than a tabloid fiction of brave politicians jailing those who engaged in the unAustralian crime of exposing the crimes of the powerful.

Just like Tudge did in releasing a critic's personal Social Services data. Who would trust medical data with them?

I have listed to opt out of this about to be compulsory scheme. I like the idea of transferability but, because of Tudge's action, decline to be targetted in a fit of ministerial pique/revenge. Upheld by 'Privacy Commissioner' too, I think?

Andrew Wilkie MP says govt secretly briefed some journalists on Sunday, giving them access to protected documents/info so they would report favorably about govt position. Has referred to AFP. (Tho they seem to be in govt thrall so not sure how far or fast that will go).

This is a far more serious and nationally important issue than political leadership speculations. MSM it will affect all your freedoms as well of those of the public if this is allowed to continue. You really need to start and support a campaign against this travesty. 1/2

Dutton's fingerprints over this too? Andrew Wilkie the lone pollie doing anything about this, so far. Govt briefing "some" journos, is major corruption, as is exempting Newscorp from the action.

It’ll be the beginning of Australia’s descent into fascism, when doing the right thing will get you jailed and eventually much worse. My family lived through fascism in Italy. My great grandfather dissented and was nearly killed. The rest of the family fell into line to survive.

You should all start organising direct action strategies as well as tweeting. You sound passionate, smart. Put a strategy together. You'll have to take risks though. when people #disrupt values change and govts adapt. There's lots possible but you must skill up #thisisanuprising
