It's a tiny consolation about a man's murder of Eurydice Dixon to see the ferocious pushback against the victim-blaming garbage from police and media about "staying safe". Men don't let women be safe anywhere.

Well they don't and that's what we have to work with. I dont think the police are victim blaming, but trying to warn women about a reality. It may not be a sophisticated warning, but what should the cops do? They can't be on every street looking out for these creeps.

Police are definitely victim blaming . We all know the world is unsafe - it’s their job not to tell us to stay home but to make the streets safe

I think they overall do a good job - countless journeys are made by women alone at night safely. I personally carry a self defence item, however. This is a tragedy which I shed a tear over. But there's no point wishing for a utopia - I consider myself warned.

So you didn’t already know you were vulnerable before this warning?

Of course I knew I was vulnerable. The big picture is that women should be able to walk alone without being "hunted" and it's what the police are trying to achieve -as you say, it's their job. But in reality, night after night, we are vulnerable alright.

So the warning told you what you already knew and didn’t otherwise advance the safety of people on the streets at night or during the day? That might just be the problem then.

The language in the reporting doesn’t help - ‘tragically lost her life’ She didn’t ‘loose her life’, it was taken from her in a brutal, unjustified attack by a male murderer. Maybe if it wasn’t sugar coated it would be harder to victim blame...?

Yes, media have a HUGE role to play in headlining & reporting accurately & changing the language so the perpetrators are rightly blamed not the victims.

Exactly! Like that guy who murdered his whole family in WA being called at ‘good bloke’ in a headline! Like somehow he was a good person until his victims drove him to murder. Say it like it is - he is a cold blooded murderer!

I get the grief response, but a "ferocious pushback" against what is sensible advice from police serves no purpose in advancing women's safety. Please don't confuse sensible advice with victim-blaming. @VictoriaPolice caught the alleged killer - they're doing their job.

The ‘sensible advice’ doesn’t help anyone. Women already know this stuff. It only serves to reinforce the notion that men killing women is some kind of blameless natural force that you just have to look out for, like a cyclone.

You don't know it doesn't help anyone, or women already know. Everyone who knows and loves a woman, will give them this advice sometime, or a reminder, or do anything else to ensure their safety. No one is saying men aren't blameless - quite the opposite.
