This is a good start. Let's see if we can drive dockless share bikes out of every cityhttps://www.smh.com.au/national/victoria/yellow-obikes-leaving-melbourne-in-wake-of-crackdown-20180612-p4zkyk.html …

Why can’t councils just build some docks?!

the companies who want to profit from this can build the docks, with proper planning permission. some do, but dockless share bikes unfairly compete with them.

The companies don't want docks. They want 100% flexibility paid for by the taxpayer (by appropriating public property for storage of their assets). Councils can and should build lots of generic bike racks that serve as a simple draw for people to park share bikes appropriately

Why should government provide something for private companies to make money? People can’t complain about fossil fuel subsidies but at the same time say councils should build things for companies so they don’t have to. https://www.melbournebikeshare.com.au  these guys did it just fine

Govts would be building something (simple bike racks, not docks) to simultaneously incentivize general bike use as a policy objective while mitigating the negative effects of leaving the sharebikes all over. I'd prefer the sharebike companies pay, but let's be realistic.

I think we'll find that several new operators will hit the streets very soon. Also don't be surprised if you start to see docked electric bikes appear!
