What if you learned that by 2050 it's "very likely" that will lose their "stealth" capability when new weaponry and technology make the seas "transparent"? That would be interesting, no?

  3. Scott Morrison has enraged a major European power to commit us to the unknown outcome of a process to find fewer subs that will take a lot longer to build, mostly overseas, and spend a lot more money in the process. This is a nuclear-scale fuck-up.

2/2 But it boils down to the same old rent-seeking that has been a feature of Australian manufacturing policy for most of the past 120 years. For the full text of the op-ed originally published in The New Daily visit

1/2 There’s a new lobby group pleading for preferential treatment for manufacturing in the name of ensuring ‘sovereignty’, a word of which the present Federal Government is especially fond.

  9. It's only a few years since The Australian and especially Paul Kelly were saying exactly the same thing... about China. And anyone who raised doubts was a xenophobe.

  10. Yesterday was the best example yet of how Scott Morrison likes a big announcement but is a sublimely awful manager. The new subs policy is a disaster.

  17. Of course the AWU loves nuclear power. It's economically illiterate, loves taxpayer handouts and opposes renewables.

  18. Pretty disappointed with the coverage of the subs decision from most of the MSM. A lot of stenography, race-calling and boys-and-their-toys. Not much analysis from a fiscal or geostrategic perspective. Does anyone care about basic accountability anymore?

  19. What happens if we get through the 18 month assessment of nuclear subs and realise they're not for us? We can't go back to Naval Group. The US/UK can dictate terms to us about what we get and how much we pay.

New nuclear-powered subs will mostly be built overseas, government sources say -- and the government is worried it won't have enough people to crew them or maintain them.
