The Library of Congress also balked at a Women’s March photo. “It has some other features that we know will be a problem politically and therefore need to be replaced. There were a couple of anti-Trump messages that appear very clearly in the image.”

Over 500 people in our Slack now. Good time to ask again about what folks might want from the space and how we can make it more useful for them. Also, just happy to see so much interest in the ethics and practice of archiving people on the web/social media

I have to ask: Have you previously altered any other image or material that’s part of the Archives?

Web archives, are more than records for accountability, transparency and history. They are juridical and predictive tools that escape traditional institutional forms of archives as surveillance capital.

When we talk about (and teach) web archives we must talk about this:

Classy move. But there is more to this story than someone making a mistake. The professional archivists and historians at NARA would not . . . just do this.

Good to see, from —but I hope for more than the promised procedural review. Leadership should engage w/the concept of anticipatory obedience & consider why it felt okay to use women’s bodies for “promotion” while blanking out their words.

Thanks for acknowledging this was wrong and for committing to do better. As you’ve admitted that you have done this in the past, we all need to be made aware of when the new policy changes are put in place.

Extremely dangerous. The Archives cannot document this extraordinary political event, sanitize the photo, and claim that it’s trying to stay out of the partisan fray. It’s NONSENSE. We *should* be angry, the Archives need to say more, and this display should come down now.

"There's no reason for the National Archives to ever digitally alter a historic photograph," Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley said. "If they don't want to use a specific image, then don't use it. But to confuse the public is reprehensible."

If our profession cannot hold onto its most basic obligation of preserving, documenting and reflecting back the *truth* of our society, then what are we doing? Why do we exist? I look to these institutions to help set the standard, I am 💔
