*We* are also celebrating the women who were instrumental. 40% of our students were arrested during the protests. I recommend that you & read "Belles of Liberty: Gender, Bennett College, and the Civil Rights Movement in Greensboro, NC"

In pop culture, oversimplified history is what is retold & becomes lore & legend. "The groundwork gets lost in the sensationalism of the dramatic acts that remain in the memory of most people." Rosa Parks wasn't 1st-- there were 3 prior attempts. Let's also celebrate groundwork

Ponder this: What was the role of women in two major periods of civil rights demonstrations during 1960 and 1961 to 1963? What is the role of cultural and gender norms in the invisibility of Bennett college women in the history books? via Linda Brown

Let's talk about the fact that in 1959, faculty member Rev John Hatchett helped organize & support students in planning the Sit-ins. "He knew that his president [Dr Willa Player] would support his actions and those of his students".-- Linda Brown
