It very likely wouldn't have worked, but the key predictable moment behind this was McConnell not leading an actual effort to impeach Trump. There's now a Civil War with only one side. R's are divided between pro-Trump and meh-Trump-but-let's-not-fight-over-it, not pro and anti.https://twitter.com/mkraju/status/1389565587303632900 …

Biggest signal yet Cheney could be gone soon from leadership. Kevin McCarthy this AM: “I have heard from members, concerned about her ability to carry out the job as conference chair, to carry out the message. We all need to be working as one, if we're able to win the majority.”

If McConnell had gone all out on impeachment, there's an outside shot they could have barred Trump from 2024 and defused the issue while signaling there would be organized movement within the GOP in opposition to him. Trump will never disarm, so the "unity" option was surrender.

How recently were we reading those anonymous "Well, he'll collapse on his own" takes from Republicans? Weeks? Now Cheney's about to be outright purged from the party and Nikki Haley is desperately trying to return to the MAGA fold. 2016 all over again.https://twitter.com/benjysarlin/status/1382659751696343042 …

Why would McConnell stick his neck out against Trump? He gave the donors a big tax cut, legions of right-wing federal judges, and years of deregulation. He's a dream come true for Republicans. The idea that Trump is any kind of liability to them is a liberal fantasy.

McConnell was never, ever going to support impeachment. #GOP 's internal "civil war".... is a distraction for the press focus. The real divide is Republicans standing on top of their desks yelling crazy things and Republicans hiding under their desks.

The Republicans on their desks are the ones who are tired of the empty promises of Conservative policies with the inevitable collapse of will power to get it done when the press doesn't agree.
