If D’s win and Trump takes the blame, he may have cost R donors hundreds of billions in taxes, more aggressive appointees on the regulatory front, a raft of judges, and various ideological budget priorities. That’s the kinda thing that might affect dynamics within the party.

That would be a big contrast to the immediate post-loss reaction, when even Trump skeptical R’s seemed psyched about the possibility of marrying his base with more suburban palatable candidates in 2022 and beyond. Suddenly there would be an actual cost.

To clarify: Of course, by definition, true believer Trump supporters will be true believer Trump supporters. As of yesterday, though, the world of R Trump support was MUCH larger than that and included many transactional players. You're seeing a lotta blind quotes from them now.

Let's say Trump wants to run again. Or back his son. This could be the difference between those players thinking "Great, it worked before and the base loves him" or at least staying neutral. Now more motivation to head it off from the start and make it a tougher path earlier.
