The coup-plotting, fascist death squad-training murderers and torturers at the CIA strongly supported George Orwell's work, using it as a propaganda weapon. The CIA even funded the Animal Farm movie, which is now mandatory viewing in many high schoolshttp://archive.fo/qkrmA

Yeah my family came from Slovakia. My parents and grandparents couldn't see their family members for 50 years. One family member got shot to death, a mother of 2, trying to escape in a car across the border, and her daughter got hit by bullet and is deaf in one ear.

Orwell's hatred of Stalinists was informed by his experience of them trying to kill him in the Spanish Civil War, and succeeding in killing several of his friends who served with him in the POUM. Lot of bad blood there.

He also wrote a whole book paying homage to anarcho-socialists in Spain. I’m a socialist and think the USSR was bad... because it was bad.
