The early stages train you for the hell-fest that comes later. The game gets tougher the further you get. Just an FYI if you game over, you can keep all your items when you continue by holding left when you press start if you've found the Hudson Bee. It's a lifesaver!
Uh ok now I know what to expect later in the game...BTW Burai Fighter didn't seem so difficult, even because it uses passwords that make the game easier...
