One could make a long list of things that Pixel phones would achieve if they had significant market share, but they don’t, and Google has not demonstrated a desire to get it. So, what purpose is served *without* significant share?

My family loves the Google Fi Network. The Pixels are native Google, so they are supposed to be the best Android experience. Plus they get the latest OS updates first. Oh, and the phones are generally less expensive than the Galaxy or the iPhone.

None of that answers the question.

Presumably, the same purpose as Google Allo. Snark aside, they provide a platform to demonstrate the latest Android capabilities, which other phone manufacturers are slow to take up. Also, dogfooding.
-
This is the opposite of dogfooding. Dogfooding would be everyone at Google using a 3 year old Samsung loaded with carrier apps. That’s the dogfood.

To drive innovation for the whole SW/HW user experience on, and to maintain control of, the Android-Google ecosystem.
-
How will it achieve that? It doesn’t do that today.

Shows everyone else capabilities of Android, let's them lead. Same as Amazon & Alexa. They hope it takes off. Currently using a pixel 2xl with Android P and it's definitely the future. Try it

Amazon is trying very hard to make Alexa ubiquitous. Google is not doing that with Pixel (and yes, I have one somewhere. It’s fine).

The reason is simple, high end phone is a very lucrative market, Google is giving it a shot.
-
It isn’t, though. No distribution or marketing.
