    Where did all the Jews go? Well, many to Portugal which was geographically and culturally close. But...in 1497 the expulsion edict came into effect over there too. Bad luck. Some fled to France, Belgium and Holland. Finally, most fled east - to the young n rising Ottoman Empire.

    What makes 1492 special is that this expulsion was an official edict issued by the Monarchs of Spain, basically aiming to eliminate any presence in Spain. Here’s s copy of the edict of expulsion, signed by Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon.

    So how many were expelled in 1492 from ? Estimates are between 40K to 160K, when in fact most Spanish Jews chose ‘option B’ - conversion to Christianity instead of expulsion. Forced expulsion of Jews from Spain began already in 1391. In the picture - a Jew in Spain.
