Unfortunately this document contains several statistical misconceptions and will perpetuate invalid responder analysis using change from baseline

Reviewed a paper yesterday, using Machine Learning to predict athletic performance . Personally felt regression would have improved the results/interpretability. ML has its place, but not everything is better with ML. Makes me think of this paper.

Dr. Woodcock at FDA coined the term SCT (small, crappy trials) to characterize many of the trials done in academic centers--too small to answer meaningful questions, many with poor designs & no analysis plan. These SCTs often aren't finished & aren't published.

In my view, a great editorial from Nature Human Behaviour. When you report on your research, "tell it like it is" and report transparently! This is closely related to reporting guidelines (e.g. ) and spin.

Apparently, lack of information was the most frequent critique. This is consistent with our own systematic review.

As a clinician, my personal feeling is that a rigorous statistician IS GOLD. I’m sorry you don’t feel that from everyone :(

My career so far: 1⃣I want to use advanced methods to answer questions I'm interested in 2⃣I want to use "simple" methods to answer questions others are interested in 3⃣I want to help other people correctly use simple methods... 4⃣I just want people to enter their data correctly

Today, we had our first class of "Critical Thinking: Exploring the Science behind the News". This is why our class matters. We opened with this jaw-dropping example. Without reading further: how did the researchers study this? What is the science behind the news? 1/ (corrected)

Indeed. Unsurprising and consistent with this SR: . But where is the anger of Twitter that the SR authors faced for the “false” comparison between machine learning and logistic regression?

45 years ago, Robert Wherry wrote "Underprediction from overfitting: 45 years of shrinkage". He included a self-written poem, which still makes sense today (although we would perhaps choose a different title nowadays). (Personnel Psychology 1975;28:1-18)
